Prior to release, there was speculation that Devil May Cry 5would have multiplayer and co-op features after they were listed on the game's Steam page. However, Capcom barely touched on Devil May Cry 5's multiplayer and co-op features in the months leading up to release, and now that the game is actually out, we can see why.
The multiplayer and co-op features in Devil May Cry 5 are very barebones. Players can't jump into games with friends or fight alongside a partner for an entire level. On the contrary, they will sometimes be paired with a random person online, who can sometimes be spotted in a level, and rarely be around to fight alongside the player in battle.
There is really no point to the multiplayer and co-op in Devil May Cry 5, and it would be a stretch to even call it 'multiplayer and co-op.' There is one big benefit to it, though, and that is whenever players are paired with someone else, they are given the option to rate them. If players are given a 'Stylish' rating from someone they're paired with, then they are gifted a gold orb. Gold orbs, for the uninitiated, are some of the most valuable items in all of Devil May Cry 5.
Gold orbs can be used to revive Dante, Nero, and V when they are downed in battle. This means that players can get through some of the game's tougher boss fights on higher difficulty settings with minimal frustration. Gold orbs are otherwise only acquired through a daily log-in bonus, purchasing one per difficulty level in the shop, and finding the ones that are hidden throughout the levels. Alternatively, players can use red orbs to revive themselves as well.
The ability to use red orbs to revive in Devil May Cry 5 has been the source of some controversy, as they can be purchased using the game's microtransactions. However, in our own Devil May Cry 5 review, we pointed out how the game is balanced in such a way that players should have a pretty consistent supply of red orbs and should never feel the need to bust out their wallet unless they just want to get all the upgrades as fast as possible.
There is also a trick to farm red orbs and get rich quick in Devil May Cry 5, though Capcom will probably patch that out eventually. Future updates will also bring the Bloody Palace DLC, but we have no idea if Capcom plans to flesh out the game's multiplayer features any further.
Devil May Cry 5 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
